2017 wasn’t a great year for collaborations. While the industry scored enough music to dominate the continent, much of the great work has come from individualistic efforts. You can find them all in our list for songs of the year.
Records from that list have two or more people combine talent to make inclusive art for everyone.
But notwithstanding, a few musicians did come together to make great music. These songs contain dynamic efforts, with all guest acts showing up with the ‘little something extra’ to lift them above and beyond.
These are the top 5 collaborations of 2017.
Wizkid – ‘Come closer’ ft Drake
One of the records of the year, Wizkid made it three records in his romance with US rapper Drake. This time it was for a personal project, off his “Sounds From The Other Side” album. Drake was a no-show for the video, but he wasn’t really missed. Much of the work was already done in the booth. For the video, he was ‘Too mixed up in drama, to go outside.”
Ycee – ‘Juice’ ft Maleek Berry
Ycee ruled 2017 with the melody and slang of ‘Juice’. Combining his drawling delivery with Maleek Berry’s vocal dexterity, he found the right record to define his year and keep his star shining. This is record also contains one of Maleek Berry’s best verses yet.
Falz, Ycee – ‘Something Light’
Falz and his comic-infused rap continues here with what is low-key a favourite of fans. Teaming up with Ycee, they hit the call-and-response button, activating a record that entertains as well as it eductates.
Tiwa Savage – ‘Ma lo’ ft Wizkid
Tiwa Savage hit the studio in 2017 with the purpose of documenting her happiness. And once she hooked up with producer Spellz and Wizkid, magic was meant to happen. Tiwa and Wizzy continue their fine collaborative chemistry, winning the year once again with a fresh take on the ‘Pon Pon’ trend.
Timaya – ‘Telli Person’ ft Phyno, Olamide
Every year Timaya gets it. He understands how to turn a great record into a pop hit. This time, he becomes the chief adviser, calling on the chemistry of Olamide and Phyno to blend dance and conscious songwriting. The moment it left the booth, it was a win.
